Nature's Christmas Decoration
Its scientific name is Euphorbia pulcherrima. In the United States we call them poinsettias, after Joel Poinsett, our first ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the U.S. in 1825. In their native land of Mexico they are "flores de Nochebuena" or Christmas Eve flowers. The Aztecs used the plant to make red dye and as a medicine. Franciscan missionaries in 17th century Mexico began to use the flower in Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped configuration of leaves represented the Star of Bethlehem and the red symbolized the blood of Jesus.
While the shopping malls are decking themselves out with holiday decorations, Mother Nature is creating her own Christmas display. This beautiful poinsettia, reaching to the second floor, is in front of a home just a few blocks away from my apartment.
