Class 230 Vivarail Train in Service
The Class 230 Vivarail Train was used in public service for the first time to transport visitors to Rail Live at long Marston.
As a London underground train the original D78 train was electrically powered by a third rail. The original Vivarail concept was to provide the electrical power using a diesel engine, thus creating a DEMU. However the concept has been extended giving opportunities to gain power from overhead lines ,third rail, batteries or even power packs: the train can draw the required current from any of these sources. The light bodyshell of the Class 230 is perfect for new power technologies.
The train provided a shuttle service from Honeybourne on the main Paddington line through to the Rail Live event.
According to the Vivarail website
"The middle car – with its range of seating options, spacious toilet, WiFi and USB sockets – was very popular.
Most people who had seen the train previously were extremely impressed at the work carried out over the past few months. Ride quality and the lack of engine noise were both frequently commented on. And perhaps most impressively that the train seemed light and airy on the hottest day of the year … slightly unexpected but very good to hear!"
