A Parade of Migrants

As I wrote previously, on Saturday we stood along Juárez Avenue to see the Day of the Dead Parade.  In spite of the long, tiring wait and the crush of people, it was a colorful and exciting parade.  The theme of this year's parade was a very timely and a not so subtle slap at the "pendejo" in the White House... "Migrations".   The parade told the story of nearly a thousand years of immigrants who have come to Mexico.

First there were the Aztecs who migrated from the north to the Valley of Mexico to found the city that would become Mexico City.

The Spanish came from across the sea and stayed.

Africans brought to colonial Mexico as slaves suffered an involuntary migration.

In the 20th century, political refugees came to Mexico after the Spanish Civil War.

Mexico City is a city of diversity with immigrants from many countries.

Even animals such as whales, turtles and monarch butterflies which make migrations to Mexico were represented.

The second half of the parade dealt with culture and traditions and included participants from several invited states.

Although the Day of the Dead Parade is only three years old, it has grown into a spectacular event that is attracting tourists from all over the world.
